HOW TO AVOID INTERNET FRAUD THE EASY WAY.
Hmmm!!!. That's a great question one can ask.Ahem.....Online fraud is one of what I call cyber crime,and cyber crime means criminal activities carried out by using computers or the internet.There are many types of cyber crime that we can talk of. Some of which are:
- Identity Theft.
- Transaction Fraud.
- Advance Fee Fraud.
- Hacking.
- Piracy.
Some of these frauds that you need to watch out for are:
Pharming scams:the fraudulent practice of directing Internet users to a bogus website that mimics the appearance of a legitimate one, in order to obtain personal information such as passwords, account numbers, etc.This one is hard to detect because it does not need any click.You are automatically redirected to a certain website even if you have typed in the correct web address.
Phishing:This one is the brother of Pharming scam and which requires the use of messages or email messages designed to steal information from you.
With phishing,you are instructed to provide personal information on a malicious website or respond to the email directly.
Whether cyber criminals are trying to steal your personal details through pharming scams,phishing,viruses, Trojan and name them; you can fight identity theft and avoid becoming a victim of online fraud with the below steps:
- Disable file sharing on your PC:File sharing is by default enabled on most computers running certain versions of Windows. What this means is that,any person on your work group can see your files.Disabling sharing of files does not mean that you can not have access to people;instead, it means you just choose who you show your files to.You can do that through windows update. Just follow the following steps:
b) On the Tools menu,select Folder Options
c) Click View tab
d) Go to Advanced Settings and uncheck Use simple file sharing( Recommended) .
- Use a strong pass word: If you choose a strong pass word it become difficult for fraudsters to gain access to your details.You can at least eight characters as your pass word.Avoid using your names and interest as your pass words because those are easily guessed by the bad guys. You should mix both upper and lower cases as well as letters and numbers.
- Read Website's Privacy Policy: You should always try your best to read the privacy policies of various websites before agreeing to do something with them. Website's privacy policies are mostly kept at the footer section of the website which makes it displayed more prominently.If you do not trust them then do not enter your personal information.

Open websites in new browser windows before entering personal details: Do not enter your personal details in to a web site you have entered through an external link or something like a pop-up adverts.Instead, open a new browser window and type in the url directly in to the address bar so as to ensure the site is legitimate.
- Try not to keep your financial details on your Lap tops:As you know, laptops are easily stolen as compared to desk tops.It recommended to pass word you laptops or computers for protection since it can be misplaced.
- Take note of companies you buy things from through the internet: Most people are often buying goods and services through the net but it is however important to note the address and phone numbers and not just relying their email address.

- Use encrypted sites where possible: Social media networks websites may ask you if you would like to turn on encryption. You have to say yes if it is an option.If the site preceded by 'https', then it is an indication that it is secured and independently verified. You would also see pad lock symbol displayed at the address bar.

- Report online fraud: If you suspect that you have become a victim of fraud, report it immediately to the proper authority.
- Destroy financial data when done with it: Most people are fond of throwing away confidential financial information banking logins or paper copies of their details. make sure you destroy them properly.
- Up date your operating software:Norton can fix issues with your as soon as the bad guys are to exploit them hence keep all your soft wares up to date.
- Always check your bank statements:The bad guys can easily get your bank details through online banking.So always check your bank statements since every detail is available at the touch of a button. Some banks will even notify you if they detect any suspicion.However, only you can tell how and where you have been making expenditures, hence do check your balance on regular basis.
